Geography
Located in the Center of Japan
Shizuoka Prefecture is located roughly in the center of Japan. Facing the Pacific Ocean, it covers an area of 7,777.43 square kilometers: 155 kilometers east to west and 118 kilometers north to south (as of October 1, 2016). The prefecture, with its abundant natural geography of ocean, mountains, and lakes, can be said to be a microcosm of Japan’s rich climate.
Population
The prefectural population is 3,635,220 (according to the 2020 national census as of October 1, 2020). There were approximately 1,430,000 households, with an average of 2.54 people per household.
Climate
The average monthly temperature is 16.5 degrees Celsius and the average annual precipitation is 2,324.9 mm (as observed by the Shizuoka Local Meteorological Observatory (link to external website) located in Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City). Except for the mountainous north, the prefecture generally has a mild marine climate. The prefecture has distinct spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons. Winters are dry and sunny with little snow in flatland areas.
