In case of emergency

In case of an earthquake, heavy rains, etc., put your own safety first.

◇Be prepared

• Have food and water for 7 days ready.

• Participate in evacuation drills.

• Confirm your safety by checking hazard maps.

Immediately hide under a table and protect your head. Put out sources of
fire when you evacuate.

◇In case of heavy rains

Do not go near dangerous places. Evacuate immediately when told to do so.

In case of illness or injury, and fire call 119!!

Rules and Manners

Rules on Garbage Disposal

• There is a set time and place for collection of each type of garbage.
• Please make sure to observe these rules.
• Buy designated plastic bags for garbage from stores.
• Segregate the garbage properly before putting them inside plastic bags.
• Bring your garbage to the designated collection place.Do not take out your garbage before the collection date.

Basic Manners and Traffic Rules

➀ Please be mindful of your volume.

• Please keep your volume down and speak softly.
• There are many Japanese people sensitive to loud sounds and voices.
• Even normal volume of sound might irritate many people.
• Particularly, please do not turn up the volume of your TV, or sing songs loudly during early hours of the morning or late at night.

➁ Please obey traffic rules.

• Cars, motorcycles, and bicycles drive on the left side of the road.
• Follow traffic lights and signages, and use pedestrian crossings.

Systems/Policies in Japan

Taxes

• People who work, live, and buy something in Japan pay taxes (税金 zeikin) to the ward, city, prefecture, national government, etc.
• The tax collected by these entities are used for the betterment of everyone's lifestyle.
• If you have questions regarding tax, please consult with your nearest tax office or local government office (city hall, ward office, town hall, etc.)
• If you have a car, you have to pay automobile tax. Your city hall will send you the details around May.
• If you own a house, you have to pay property tax. Your city hall will send you the details around April to June.

Pension

• In the pension (年金 nenkin) system, the money collected from everyone is used to help:

　（1） the elderly

　（2） people who have disabilities due to sickness or injury

　（3） the bereaved family of those in the pension system

• All residents of Japan aged 20 to 59 are required to pay pension.
• You can pay it on your own, or your employer can deduct it from your salary and pay on your behalf.
• There are 2 types of pension: National Pension paid by those aged 20 to 59, and Employee's Pension Insurance paid by those working in companies, etc.

Insurance

• All residents of Japan are enrolled in the Health Insurance System.
• Everyone pays this for when they have to receive treatment from injury or sickness.
• The amount you have to pay for treatment is reduced and the rest is covered by insurance.
• You can pay insurance on your own, or your employer can deduct it from your salary and pay on your behalf.
